The swim team here at Shadow Ridge has been competing during the spring season to fight their way towards the top with the hope of making it to state, as well as having fun along the way.
“Practice is very fun,” sophomore Aoi Lucero stated. “All of my teammates have a lot of energy and I don’t recall there being a single practice where I’m not having fun.”
For these athletes, it is important to have fun with teammates while being on the team. It ensures they actually want to be there and don’t get burnt out.
Lucero states, “Everyone has been improving their times. It’s clear that everyone is becoming stronger as the season progresses.”
The team has been growing in their competitions and their friendships. They are all very happy together during practices and meets.
“I have many favorite memories from this season but I think all the dinners and hang outs we have together make the hard practices worth it,” said Lucero.

Being a part of a team is always great, but the atmosphere among the fellow swimmers is a different level of fun.
Mersereau states, “It is a lot of fun, hard work, and I wish more people actually knew it existed, so they would come to tryouts and give it a real shot.”
Of course swimming is a sport, so it takes a lot of dedication and perseverance to be able to compete at the high levels they are reaching toward.
“Our goals for this year were to have fun and do our best, as well as win state,” said Mersereau.
It is important for a team to not only aim towards success, but having fun as a whole.
“We have definitely been having a lot of fun, and we will see if we win state,” Mersereau says.
They have reached goals that the team set for themselves so far and are hoping to continue to strive toward state.
“Advice I’d give someone looking to join the swim team is try your best everyday,” says Lucero. “Swimming is a very unforgiving sport, missing one day can ruin your performance significantly. Breathing too much during a race could affect your time. Just make sure you try hard and have fun because if you aren’t having fun, then there’s really no point in doing it.”
The swim team is a fun team to be a part of and anyone is able to come try out. Next year, if you are wanting to make some friends and be part of an extra curricular at school, then maybe try out for swimming!
