Senior Mackenzie Lee, has been involved in choir for six years, beginning in elementary school. From starting with after school choir lessons to overcoming the challenges of virtual choir during COVID, Lee stayed committed even when the experience was far from perfect. Through the guidance of Mr. Halvorson and countless hours of practice, choir became a source of confidence and discipline.
Lee stated, “My confidence has grown by repetition and correction. Mr. Halvorson has been an amazing teacher at correcting things to make sure I’m doing it right, and making sure that I get it right every time; that alone has improved my confidence. I’ve also gained a lot of confidence in performing when I know I have a strong section to rely on.”
A major part of Lee’s motivation to continue choir has been the dedication she has already put into it over the years. Even when practices became time-consuming or difficult, she stayed committed because of the progress she had made and the responsibility she felt toward her section and director. Her consistency allowed her to not only improve as a performer, but also to see choir as something she wants to remain part of her life after high school.

She continues, “Although I am not pursuing choir at all academically in college, I do plan on pursuing it as a hobby. Whether that be a club or a church choir, I look forward to applying my skills and having music in my life forever.”
In addition to performance skills, Lee explains that choir has also taught her important life lessons that extend beyond music. Working with others in rehearsals and performances helped her develop stronger teamwork and time management.
“Choir has taught me many life applicable skills. One great lesson has been being able to evenly disburse work that needs to be done on a project and creating a plan of action.” She stated, “This makes the project at hand not so mighty and difficult to handle, as well as getting the best result.”
As Lee prepares for graduation, choir remains one of the most meaningful parts of her high school experience. Although she does not plan to pursue it academically, the skills and confidence she gained will continue to influence her in college and beyond. Whether through a club or church choir, she plans to keep music in her life and carry the lessons she learned with her into the future.
