The Dance Team at Shadow Ridge is more than just a group that performs at games and competitions. For many students, it has become a place where friendships grow, confidence builds, and hard work pays off. Through long practices and team bonding, members say the experience has created a strong sense of community and school spirit.
Shadow Ridge High School Dance Team sophomore, Emma Ririe, shared what a typical practice looks like and how the team connects both on and off the dance floor.

Ririe said, “We start with a team ‘campfire’ where we chat about dance and connect as a group. After that, we warm up together and then jump into dancing, practicing different routines and skills.”
Practices may seem fun and energetic, but team members also put in many hours preparing for performances and competitions. Dancers must stay focused, flexible, and ready to improve their routines as events approach.
Ririe said, “Preparation for competitions or performances usually means extra practices and a lot of stretching to make sure we’re ready to give our best performance.”
Along with the physical demands of dance, members also face challenges that require concentration and dedication. Learning and remembering multiple routines can become difficult, especially during busy weeks.
Ririe said, “The hardest part is remembering all the different dances, especially after a busy weekend or when routines change quickly.”
Even with the challenges, Ririe encourages other students to join the team because of the positive environment and opportunities it provides.
Ririe says, “Join! It’s so much fun, a fantastic way to make friends, and a great opportunity to improve your dance skills while showing school spirit.”
Another dancer, freshman, Lillee Sevy, explained that one of the strongest parts of the team is the welcoming atmosphere that makes dancers feel accepted and supported.

Sevy said, “The team’s overall atmosphere is welcoming and just a place I can look forward to being. Everyone is so kind and makes me feel like I belong.”
According to Sevy, the connection between teammates goes beyond dance itself. She described the team as a family that encourages one another and shares a strong passion for what they do.
Sevy said, “I haven’t been on many dance teams but one thing for sure is this team has a bond. It’s like a family. Even before I was on the team they were so friendly and treated me so well. They have such a passion and determination in what they are doing. They have respect for others and themselves.”
That support system has helped create a positive environment where dancers feel encouraged no matter their experience level. Team members constantly motivate each other and celebrate one another’s successes.
Sevy says, “This team is the most supportive team I have ever been on. They are always hyping each other up even if we fall. No matter what level of dance you are on they don’t treat you any different. They are patient and kind. They are constantly cheering each other on no matter what!”
Through dedication, teamwork, and encouragement, the Shadow Ridge Dance Team continues to build strong relationships while representing their school with pride.
