The Shadow Ridge Swim team had a strong showing last season, exceeding many expectations.
Coach Bedingfield said, “We had a very positive swim season. They exceeded most of the goals we had for them, and one of our swimmers ended up fifth at state, so that was exciting.”
One highlight came from freshman Sophia Hammer, who made a splash breaking two varsity records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and also earning a spot at state. The boys team showed resilience even when their top ruler was ruled ineligible, pulling it together when it mattered most.
Reflecting on lessons learned, Coach Bedingfield emphasized the importance of the basics.
“We just need to keep things simple. As far as attitude, attendance, effort. You know, there were too many factors that divided the team in some ways, and so we just need to keep things back to the basics. Show up for practice, do what you’re supposed to do, and work hard, and good things will happen,” Coach Bedingfield expressed.
Looking ahead, the primary goal is to build stronger team unity and push training to new heights. Bedingfield explained how practices will become more challenging to match the swimmers growing abilities.
An important policy change is aimed at improving commitment: all swimmers who compete with outside club teams must also attend every high school practice.
Coach Bedingfield pointed out, “One of the changes we’re making is that all the kids that swim for club teams outside of the high school environment are required to come to every high school practice, so if they swim for the Sandpipers, the number one team in Nevada, they still have to come to our practice.”

As the new season approaches, Coach Bedingfield looks forward to improve seeing returning swimmers grow into team leaders and watching newcomers improve day by day.
“I guess I’m excited to see the swimmers that have been on the team for a season or two seasons, coming back and watching them grow into leaders on the team, and then the new people. It’s always fun watching them start from scratch and get better and better on a daily basis.”
