For Shadow Ridge High School sophomore Rosely Hensley-Makiao, flag football has become more than just a sport. It’s a place where she’s found confidence, competition, and a strong sense of belonging. Now in her second year playing, Makiao continues to grow both on and off the field.
Makiao’s journey into flag football began with her family. “My brothers all played football and I always wanted to try growing up but never had the chance because I play softball and my parents didn’t want to risk injury,” she explained. Watching them play made her curious about the sport.
When she reached high school, she finally got her chance. “I thought it would be fun to try and got the go ahead from my parents in high school and ended up loving it.” That first season helped her discover a new passion.
This year, Makiao feels much more comfortable on the field. “It has been a lot better, I know a lot more people and understand the game a little better,” she said. Knowing her teammates better has made the experience even more enjoyable.

Flag football is competitive, but Makiao enjoys the challenge. “It’s a competitive game and the pressure is on but it makes the game all the better.” The intensity pushes her to stay focused and motivated during every play.
Makiao plays as an outside linebacker and sometimes as a safety. “I love how aggressive it is and love making plays when the game is getting tight,” she shared. Those moments bring out her confidence and determination.
Mentally, Makiao has also grown since her first season. “I feel like I understand the mental part of the game a lot better than last year,” she said. Learning plays and adjustments has become easier with experience.
One of the most important parts of the season for Makiao is her team. “Our team culture is great, it feels like having a second family,” she explained. “They make me laugh the most and have seen me at my good and bad.”
Looking back, her first season still stands out. “Our whole season last year stood out to me specifically cause it was my first and I felt like I had something to prove to myself.” That mindset continues to drive her.
As for her goals, Makiao stays focused on improvement. “Keep getting sacks, stay out of my head and help my team with that state title!” With her passion and determination, Makiao looks forward to returning to the field every season until her last at Shadow Ridge.
Coach Pack, Defensive Coach of the Varsity Women’s Flag Football Team, is excited to keep pushing the team forward with Makiao as a specialist in multiple sections. “Rosie is like a perfect teammate and is extremely coachable. I love the fact that she was a key contributor as a freshmen to the team and is continuing to fill that role as a sophomore. She is a very dynamic athlete who can play multiple positions and be successful,” stated Coach Pack.
