The Shadow Ridge Flag Football Team led by Coach Matthew Nighswonger has been very successful throughout the years and now, they’re using precise training to prepare and take home the championship once again in 2026. The team enters the new season with a renewed mindset focused on discipline, communication, and consistency, three values Coach Nighswonger believes determine a team’s identity long before a game ever begins.
From the very start of preseason workouts, Coach Nighswonger has emphasized detail-oriented training. “We don’t just run plays,” he said. “We break down every route, every step, every angle.”
Instead of going through drills for the sake of completing them, the coach wants players to understand the purpose behind each action. Athletes say this has completely changed how they see the game, creating a deeper awareness of timing, spacing, and strategy.
Players also credit the team’s success to the environment the coach has built.
Senior, Jaylani Palmer, shared, “Coach holds us to a high standard, but he also teaches us how to hold each other accountable.”
That accountability is clear during practice, where teammates regularly pull each other aside to correct technique or talk through missed assignments. Instead of criticism, players describe it as support, everyone wants everyone else to get better.
Ashlynn Mitchell, senior, added that Coach Nighswonger makes leadership part of their daily routine. “He tells us that communication isn’t optional,” Mitchell said. “If we want to compete like champions, we have to talk like champions.”
During drills, players call out coverages, motion, and open gaps, often louder than necessary. But they say it pays off during scrimmages, where the field becomes a fast-moving web of communication that keeps them connected on every play.

Team chemistry has also played a major role in their preparation this year.
Senior, Camden Finlinson, stated, “We trust each other more than ever. When someone makes a mistake, nobody attacks them, we fix it together.”
According to the players, that trust developed naturally because of the structure and culture Coach Nighswonger has built over time. They know that the stronger their bond becomes, the stronger their plays will be under pressure.
As the Shadow Ridge Flag Football Team sets its sights on the 2026 season, their approach reflects more than a desire to win, it reflects a commitment to growth. With a coach who demands precision and players who are willing to put in the work, the team is determined to step onto the field better, smarter, and more unified than ever before.
