At Shadow Ridge High School, the orchestra and guitar program has become a model of consistency and excellence, thanks to the leadership of Mr. Richards. For the past 16 years, the program has earned Superior ratings, an achievement that reflects not only musical talent, but also a deep commitment to discipline, growth, and passion for music.
According to Richards, one of the biggest reasons for this long-standing success is a focus on consistency in every aspect of the program. By maintaining high standards year after year, he has worked to build a culture where students clearly understand expectations and take pride in meeting them. His strong background in music allows him to effectively teach and communicate complex musical concepts, while his careful selection of challenging yet appropriate pieces helps highlight the strengths of each ensemble.

A key element of the program is its emphasis on fundamentals. Richards makes it a priority to reinforce tone quality, intonation, rhythm, and technique during every rehearsal, regardless of the group’s level. This daily dedication builds a strong musical foundation, allowing students to grow into more confident performers and achieve higher levels of success over time.
Richards said, “I hope students take away a strong sense of discipline and pride in their work. Being part of an orchestra teaches them how to be prepared, how to contribute to something bigger than themselves, and how to stay committed even when things get challenging. It also builds teamwork and communication, learning to listen, adjust, and support others in a group setting. I also hope they leave with confidence and resilience. Performing isn’t always easy, but pushing through nerves and striving for excellence helps them grow in ways that carry into other areas of life. Most importantly, I want them to develop a lasting appreciation for music and to walk away with experiences and memories that stay with them long after they leave the program.”
Richards believes the difference between a “good” orchestra and a “superior” one lies in attention to detail and student ownership. While a good orchestra can play the correct notes and rhythms, a superior ensemble goes further, focusing on precision, balance, blend, and musical expression. Most importantly, students in a superior group take responsibility for their performance, holding themselves and their peers to a higher standard.
Through his passion for music and dedication to his students, Mr. Richards has created more than just a successful program, he has built a lasting culture of excellence that continues to inspire young musicians at Shadow Ridge.
