According to KTNV 13 Las Vegas News, Nevada State University is planning to build a new satellite campus in North Las Vegas, and it’s a big deal for students in the area. More specifically the campus is going to be located in the downtown area of Vegas off Lake Mead Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard North, as part of a new development called the NLV Gateway. As the city keeps growing, more people need easier access to college. Instead of making everyone travel far to the main campus in Henderson, the university is trying to bring classes closer to where students actually live. The campus is expected to be open come fall of 2027.
A lot of students who go to Nevada State already live in North Las Vegas, and commuting can take a long time. Traffic, gas money, and busy schedules can make it harder for students to stay in school. By building a campus nearby, it will be easier for students to attend classes and manage their time better. This could help more people go to college, especially students who have jobs or family responsibilities.

Jordan Ramirez, senior, says, “Having a campus closer to home would make it way easier for me to actually go to college without stressing about the long drive every day.”
The new campus will start off small. It will mostly offer basic classes like English, math, and science. Even though it won’t have everything right away, it’s still a good first step. In the future, the campus could grow and add more programs and services for students. This way, more students might be able to complete their degrees closer to home.
This new campus could also help the community. When a college opens in an area, it can bring more jobs and businesses. It can also give people more opportunities to learn new skills and find better careers. The city and the university are working together on this project because they both want to improve education and the local economy.
Aaliyah Thompson, junior, says, “I think it’s really cool that they’re building something in North Las Vegas because it gives students here more opportunities.”
Another cool thing is that local high school students might get chances to take college classes early. This can help them get ahead and feel more prepared for college after they graduate. It also saves time and money, which is really helpful for a lot of families.
Marcus Lee, senior, says, “If I could take classes nearby, I’d probably save a lot of time and money, which would help me focus more on school.”
Construction in North Las Vegas shows that Nevada State University is trying to make college easier to access. Instead of expecting students to come to them, they are going out into the community. This change could help a lot more students succeed and reach their goals.
