The gym buzzed with nervous energy and determination as cheerleaders took the floor for this year’s intramurals and tryouts, marking a fresh start for athletes eager to prove themselves. After months away from the spotlight for some, the event became more than just a test of skill, it was a return to passion, teamwork, and personal growth.
Participants rotated through a series of evaluations, including tumbling, jumps, chants, and overall performance. Judges watched closely, not only for technical ability but also for confidence, spirit, and the ability to work cohesively with others. For many athletes, the experience came with a mix of excitement and pressure.
Among those trying out was sophomore Olivia Marano, who ultimately earned a spot on the varsity team. Reflecting on the experience, she shared both the challenges and the excitement of stepping back onto the mat.
“I was super nervous because it’s been about a year since I cheered, but once I actually started it was exciting,” Marano said.
That initial nervousness is something many athletes could relate to, especially after time away from the sport. For Marano, the biggest obstacle wasn’t just physical, it was mental.
“The hardest part has been getting my skills clean, and getting out of my head for tumbling, and not letting my anxiety get to me,” Marano explained.
Despite those challenges, her perseverance paid off, earning her a coveted place on the varsity roster.

Cheerleading has played a significant role in Marano’s life, shaping her both on and off the mat.
“Cheer has been a part of my life for about four-ish years now,” Marano said. “I love being a part of a team, and I love that it helps me grow as a person physically and mentally.”
Her passion for the sport was evident throughout tryouts, where her determination and positive attitude stood out.
Joining her on varsity is Mary Young, who also impressed judges during the intramurals. Like Marano, Young expressed excitement about the opportunity ahead and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a team.
“I’m looking forward to being part of a team again and finally cheering at games and doing comps again,” Young said.
Her enthusiasm reflects the shared anticipation among athletes who are eager to return to performing in front of crowds and competing at a high level.
The tryouts not only highlighted individual talent but also reinforced the importance of teamwork and resilience. Coaches emphasized that making varsity is just the beginning, as athletes will continue to refine their skills and build trust with one another throughout the season.
As the results were announced and teams finalized, the atmosphere shifted from anxious anticipation to celebration. For athletes like Marano and Young, the hard work has already begun to pay off, but the journey is far from over.
With games and competitions on the horizon, the newly formed varsity team is ready to take the mat together, bringing energy, dedication, and school spirit to every performance.
This year’s intramurals and tryouts served as a reminder that cheerleading is more than routines and stunts, it’s about growth, perseverance, and the power of being part of something bigger than itself.
