Softball is often seen as just another spring sport, but for players and coaches, it represents months of preparation, teamwork, and growth.

Varsity softball coach Drew Dubois states, “We’re blessed with great student athletes here at Shadow Ridge. This year’s softball team feels special in the sense that we have a bigger roster but the quality of each member is awesome. As ball players they all bring so much to the table and have created such an environment of competition but also the kindness of them as people is great. Even when they make a mistake and get replaced they are right there supporting each other.¨
The foundation of the season starts long before the first pitch. Softball practices are designed not only to improve physical skills like hitting, fielding, and throwing, but also to build mental toughness and communication.Â
One of the biggest themes for this 2026 season is the importance of versatility. This year’s roster has been filled with girls who have been able to play wherever the team has needed them most, which has benefited the team when they are missing girls.
Dubois states, ¨The team has faced a number of challenges with people missing for different reasons. The team has been able to work through them as a team and the next girl has stepped up and done her job. This has felt like a deep team as far as picking up any sort of slack for each other.¨
This season’s roster has placed a major focus on team chemistry, and it has become one of the teams biggest factors when it comes to winning. Activities outside of practice such as team bonding events, and shared goals have helped strengthen the team’s relationships.Â
Team member Rosely Hensley-Mokiao states, ¨Our team chemistry is really good, our goal as a team is to play together and win together taking it one game at a time.¨

Being a part of the coaching staff has been such a great experience for Dubois, and the girls have taught him so much as a coach. Player development is a key part of the program, and Dubois takes pride in working hard towards passing his knowledge to the players.
Dubois states, ¨My biggest learning experience as a coach this year has revolved around knowing your role. Just as we as coaches ask the student athletes to know their role and own it, we as coaches have to do the same. I have been blessed to work with incredible coaching staff, and softball is no exception to it. I know that I can bring something important and unique to the team to help benefit not only the players but all the other coaches as well.¨Â
As the season continues, the team remains focused on improvement, resilience, and unity. While each game brings a new challenge, the foundation built through preparation and teamwork continues to guide them forward.
Through the eyes of the coach softball is more than a sport, it is a learning experience that shapes athletes both on and off the field.
