During the spring season at Shadow Ridge High School, the Men’s Golf Team is a competitive group of athletes who are determined.
“This year is a new beginning because all of our starting players were seniors and graduated last year,” explained Coach Steven Huesch. “We have a good group of young men this year that are ready to take the reins and learn what it takes to compete at the varsity level with some of the best players in the state. Our players are young and inexperienced, but they are putting in the work and learning how to improve their scoring by working on fundamentals and the weak parts of their game. I would like to see everyone improve their average by at least 5 strokes and hopefully see 2 of our players qualify for the postseason regional tournament.”

With big goals for this season, Huesch is dedicated to his athletes and helping them become the best they can. They have high hopes to reach their true potential this season both individually and as a team.
“It’s a really competitive and a great atmosphere to be in and the team wants to win this year,” explained sophomore Diego Cano.
After building chemistry and having experience, the team is focused on their potential to win. They all have high focus and strong intentions during their practices and matches.
“My favorite part about golf is it’s hard to play and literally no one is perfect at it,” Cano says, “I really like that you can always get better because there is not only one way that is right.”
Golf is definitely a challenging game that focuses on growth, motivation, and unity as a whole team.
Huesch said, “The players are very excited to be a part of the team and show good work ethic during practice. They work very well together and are starting to form a good bond that should carry over for the next several years. The team is headed in the right direction and the coaches are pleased with the progress so far this season. We are all having fun and look forward to the rest of the season!”
Golf, of course, has its hardships, but the team is always able to bring each other up in a time of despair. Their bond is what is really going to help them accomplish their goals.
“Our team was one of the best in the state for the past 4 years, we won a regional championship and took 2nd at state twice,” continued Huesch. “We also had two individual state champions. We do not have any returning starters, but will be working hard in the next several years to produce the best results possible.”
Huesch has an ambitious outlook for his athletes after past accomplishments. This isn’t just a one year goal, but an expectation for the next few years as the athletes learn and grow.
