As spring sports begin at Shadow Ridge High School, the track and field team is already stepping into the new season with excitement and high hopes. With returning athletes continuing to build on last year’s successes and several talented newcomers joining the team, the start of the season has been filled with energy, determination, and optimism for what lies ahead.
Coach Micheal Smith said, “Newcomer, Audrey Luth, is looking to be a state finalist in her first year of competing and the first girl hurdler in four years from Shadow.”

The beginning of any track season is always a time for athletes to adjust to the demands of daily practices, early mornings, and the challenge of balancing school with athletics.
Junior Mandi Abney said, “It has been difficult adjusting to less time after school to do homework, but if I don’t keep my grades up then I don’t get to run, so it is worth it.”
One of the most exciting parts of the early season has been the performance of several new athletes on the team. Despite being new to the program, a number of these athletes have already made a strong impression. Some newcomers have even qualified for regionals early in the season, an achievement that usually takes athletes much longer to reach. Their success has brought enthusiasm to the team and has shown the potential that this year’s group of athletes has.
This is encouraging not only for the athletes themselves, but also for the entire team. It shows that the program continues to grow and that new talent is constantly emerging. It also creates a motivating environment for everyone involved, as athletes push each other to perform their best and support one another in reaching their goals.
Coach Smith stated,”Luke Juden, in pole vault is looking to be an individual state champion, Boys 400 and 4×400 which of right now consist of Hawkin, Jokia, Zach, and Nick should be state championions in the 4×400 and a few of them hopefully will go to state in the 400.” He added “Savannah Abney in the girls 800 will be a young force to be reckinded with,”

Of course, a successful track season is not only about individual performances. Track and field is a sport that relies heavily on teamwork, even though many events are competed individually. Teammates encourage each other during workouts, cheer each other on during races, and celebrate improvements both big and small.
Coaches have also played a major role in preparing the team for the season ahead. Through structured practices and guidance, they help athletes improve their technique, stay focused, and work toward their personal bests. Their experience and leadership help keep the team motivated as the season continues and competition becomes more intense.
Although the season is still just beginning, the early results and dedication from athletes suggest that Shadow Ridge track could have a very promising year. Many athletes are hopeful about what they can accomplish before the season ends.
If the start of the season is any indication, the Shadow Ridge Track and Field Team has a lot to look forward to. With strong performances, determined athletes, and supportive teammates, the team is off to a great start and hopeful that the rest of the season will continue to bring success.
