Corwin Olave, a junior at Shadow Ridge High School, serves as the brass captain for the marching band. Although this is his first year in a leadership role, he is already making a big impact on the band. Olave’s leadership style is focused on teamwork, motivation, and leading by example.
One of the biggest challenges Olave faces as a captain is identifying areas where the brass section can improve. “It’s challenging to find aspects of our show that we need to improve,” he said. “Especially since this is my first year in leadership. It gets easier though.” His ability to recognize the need for improvement and work toward it shows his commitment to not just his own performance but to the entire section.
A major strength of the brass section, according to Olave, is their strong friendship and positive attitude. “Honestly, as a brass section, we’ve never really struggled with being friends with each other,” he shared. “They’re really good at staying positive.” This positive energy helps create a supportive environment where everyone works together to achieve their best. Olave plays a big part in fostering this sense of unity and trust among his peers.
His motivation to perform well and his sense of responsibility are key to his leadership. “I’m backed by motivation to perform well,” he explained. “So, while I enjoy marching and like to have fun, I also have to take responsibility in keeping them up to a high standard.” While he enjoys the fun aspects of marching, Olave understands that discipline and focus are essential to success. He takes his role seriously, making sure everyone stays focused during practice.

As a captain, Olave works mainly with the whole brass section rather than giving one-on-one attention. “I’m usually helping the whole of brass or high brass with cleaning the show and such,” he said. Even though he doesn’t spend a lot of time with individuals, Olave’s leadership is felt in the way he motivates the entire group to work together efficiently.
Focus is an important part of Olave’s leadership approach. “When it comes to being on the field, or even a sectional, we get so much more done when we’re focused and on task,” he said. “So, I just try to be an example of what focus is.” He leads by example, showing his section how to stay focused and make the most of their rehearsal time.
Olave’s also emphasizes building team spirit before performances. “Before football games we do a little huddle and chant, sort of like what I’d do before volleyball games,” he explained. “I also try to say a prayer as a group before each of our performances.” These small traditions help the brass section stay connected and positive, ensuring they’re all on the same page before they perform.
Being a captain has also helped Olave’s grow as a person. “Being a captain has definitely improved how I act around others, always being conscious of what type of an example I set and who I represent,” he said. While Olave doesn’t plan to pursue a career in music, he recognizes that the skills he’s learning as a leader will be valuable for his future, including in college applications and resumes.
Olave’s leadership as the brass captain at Shadow Ridge High School highlights the importance of teamwork, focus, and motivation. His ability to lead by example and keep the section united has had a positive impact on the band. As he continues to grow in this role, Corwin is leaving a strong legacy that will inspire future members of the brass section.
