Lillian Sparks, a dedicated student and passionate musician, stands tall as the drum major for Shadow Ridge High School’s Marching Band. Her journey to leadership began not with a baton, but with a clarinet in seventh grade at Saville Middle School. That first step into the beginning band sparked a love for music that would grow into a deep commitment to excellence, community, and leadership.
“I knew I wanted to be a drum major when I saw all the upperclassmen in different leadership positions,” Sparks recalls. “I looked up to them so much and knew I wanted to be like them.”
Inspired by those who came before her, she set her sights on becoming a guiding force within the band, someone who could lead the band to success.
The road to drum major wasn’t easy. Sparks faced long hours of practice and moments of mental exhaustion.
“I had to push through rough mental blocks and believe I could do it, above all,” she shares.
That perseverance paid off, earning her the role that now allows her to inspire others the way she was once inspired.

Shadow Ridge’s Marching Band is more than just a group of musicians, it’s a family. With two rehearsals a week, each lasting three and a half hours over the course of three months, the band works tirelessly to perfect their performance. But it’s the people, not just the music, that make it special.
“No matter who joins, we all have respect for each other,” Sparks says. “The kindness from everyone in every section is amazing.”
Volunteers play a vital role in the band’s success, offering their time and expertise to help students grow and at the heart of it all is Mr. Hartley, the band director.
“He’s the best teacher I could ever ask for,” Sparks says with admiration. Under his guidance, the band transforms hard work into harmony, creating shows that are both challenging and beautiful.
What makes Sparks favorite part of school is the sense of connection.
“Everyone has a part in the band,” she explains. “Everyone’s connected and just having fun while trying to put a difficult but beautiful show together.”
As drum major, she helps weave that connection into every rehearsal and performance, leading with empathy, strength, and a deep love for the music.
Lillian Sparks is more than a drum major, she’s a role model, a leader, and a testament to what passion and perseverance can achieve. Shadow Ridge is lucky to have her, guiding the band with grace and grit, one beat at a time.
