At Shadow Ridge High School, an increasing number of students are setting their sights on one of the most meaningful academic honors offered to Nevada graduates: the Nevada Seal of Biliteracy. This award, placed proudly on a senior’s diploma and transcript, recognizes students who have achieved fluency in English and at least one additional language an accomplishment that reflects dedication, cultural awareness, and good communication skills.
The Seal of Biliteracy, offered statewide through the Nevada Department of Education, has become a growing point of pride on the Shadow Ridge campus. Teachers and counselors describe it as an opportunity for students to demonstrate the language skills many have developed through years of coursework, immersion at home, or personal commitment to learning another culture. At Shadow Ridge, world language teachers often encourage their students as early as freshman year to consider the pathway toward earning the distinction.
Alex Loya, junior, states, “I think the Seal of Biliteracy gives students who really put forth the effort to learn a second language a better shot at translating jobs or any job they need to be able to speak to people who aren’t as fluent in English.”

To qualify, students must complete all required English Language Arts courses for graduation and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. They must also demonstrate proficiency in a second language, which can be shown by passing an Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate language exam or by earning a passing score on a district-approved proficiency test. For many students, this requirement becomes a motivating factor to challenge themselves with advanced courses or to continue improving skills in their heritage languages.
Shadow Ridge staff members say that the Seal is more than just a decorative symbol on a diploma. They frequently remind students that biliteracy is a competitive advantage in college admissions, scholarship opportunities, and future careers. Universities and employers often look favorably upon applicants who can communicate effectively in multiple languages, especially as Nevada’s communities grow increasingly diverse.
For seniors who earn the award, recognition includes a certificate, a diploma seal, and a special transcript notation. These outward marks of achievement often represent years of effort late-night studying, cultural exploration, and constant practice. Many graduates have shared that earning the Seal helped them feel more connected to their identity, family, and future goals.
Mrs. Torres, explains, “The Biliteracy Seal recognizes students who are proficient in English and at least one other language. Earning the seal shows strong language skills, opens up more academic and career opportunities, honors students’ cultural identities, and encourages continued language study while strengthening thinking and communication skills. It signals to colleges and employers that a student can work across languages and cultures. For multilingual learners, the seal validates their home language as an academic strength and helps ensure fair recognition of diverse language backgrounds.”
At Shadow Ridge, the Seal of Biliteracy continues to inspire Mustangs to broaden their horizons and celebrate the value of multilingualism. As participation increases each year, the school community remains proud of the students who take on the challenge and demonstrate what it means to be globally minded leaders in an interconnected world.
