The federal government shutdown on October 1, 2025, and lasted 42 days, marking the longest shutdown in history. Due to disagreement between Republicans and Democrats, lawmakers in Congress failed to pass new funding bills for the upcoming year. Consequently, various government-funded services, namely the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program and Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps), came to a pause, ultimately impacting millions of Americans. For more information, follow government websites and credible news sources.
For those who know little about government shutdowns, government teacher Cecilia Suarez explained, “The inability for congress to come to an agreement on how they’re spending our funds that are available for the upcoming year. Failure to get presidential approval and congressional approval.”
Though the shutdown has come to an end, those that rely on food assistance will be removed from SNAP.
Mrs. Suarez expressed, “As an educator, I have students who are not going to care about a test when they’re hungry. It impacts their learning, their ability to focus, to be eager, and even to attend school. I have to help my parents to go make money to supplement the support that we’re no longer receiving, they’re not going to come to school, and if they miss school, they miss assignments, they fall behind, and possibly lose credit.”

Including food banks, there are several community programs in Las Vegas giving away food to those in need, one of those being The Just One Project. The Just One Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating lasting change in the community by giving aid to food insecure families and addressing the deeper challenges people face. The organization will be hosting emergency food drive-thru events starting from 8:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m on every weekday, at 1401 N. Decatur Blvd., Las Vegas, NV. Daily events are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:00–7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. at the Dolores Huerta Resource Center.
According to Feeding America, 1 in 5 kids in Clark County are food insecure. The reality for thousands of students is that they receive breakfast and lunch at school not knowing if they’ll eat another meal after school or during the weekend. Serving Our Kids Foundation is a child hunger relief foundation focused on providing weekend meal bags for food-insecure children. This gives an opportunity to families that are struggling as a result of the government shutdown to reach out to their child’s school to enroll in the weekend meal bag program.
The Salvation Army affirms that 60 million Americans are dangerously close to falling into poverty while 46.7 million Americans are living in poverty. Considering the federal minimum wage does not meet the cost of living, the loss of government-funded resources will harm the middle class, especially those that are low-income. On that note, The Salvation Army provides low-income families and individuals with more than just food. Their services include clothes, food, hygiene products, baby items, veteran assistance, and other additional aid. They have a food pantry that is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at 830 East Lake Mead Pkwy., Henderson, NV.
For further resources, Nevada 211 offers a statewide list of food banks and programs that offer daily hot meals and food delivery services to the elderly. Similarly, the Three Square Food Bank created a catalog of upcoming emergency food supplies while also providing food pantries that are close by for families.
