In a monumental upset that sent shockwaves through the local high school football scene, the Shadow Ridge junior varsity team suffered its first defeat in over two seasons, falling 42–22 to perennial powerhouse Bishop Gorman. The highly anticipated matchup, which took place on Thursday, October 23, marked the end of a remarkable win streak that had stretched back to the 2023 season.
For the Mustangs, the loss was a sobering reality check, but it came at the hands of one of the nation’s most dominant programs. Shadow Ridge’s JV program has enjoyed a period of sustained excellence, building a reputation for dominance against its rivals. This success was evident as recently as the prior season, when the team rolled to a 9–0 overall record.

“We played the best we could but in the end the better team wins,” said sophomore Jack Griffith.
However, the Gaels proved to be an entirely different challenge. From the opening kickoff, Bishop Gorman’s athleticism and execution were on full display. Despite a valiant effort from the Mustangs, who had outscored opponents by a wide margin throughout the past two seasons, the Gaels’ relentless pressure on both sides of the ball proved to be the difference. Bishop Gorman’s performance mirrored that of their highly decorated varsity squad, which also recently posted a dominant 43–0 victory over Shadow Ridge’s varsity team.
“We still have forever to become undefeated again,” stated sophomore Zaire Smith.
While the final score wasn’t what Shadow Ridge fans had hoped for, the Mustangs showcased their trademark resilience. Facing a tough deficit, the team fought until the final whistle, a testament to the character and grit that defined their historic win streak. The defeat serves as a powerful learning experience for a promising group of athletes, giving them crucial insight into the level of competition required to compete at the highest level.
“We all lost together” stated sophomore Jeremiah Cryer.
For Bishop Gorman, the win adds another impressive line to their dynasty’s resume. The victory over the Mustangs’ undefeated JV team further solidifies the Gaels’ status as a top program, from the freshman level all the way to varsity.
As the dust settles on Shadow Ridge’s season, the focus will now shift to the future. With much of the JV talent expected to make the jump to varsity, this taste of defeat may be the ultimate motivator. The loss to a titan like Bishop Gorman is a reminder that even the best teams can be beaten, and that there is always room for improvement. The Mustangs’ historic win streak may be over, but a new chapter of growth has just begun.
