Emily Grimes’s award winning art piece

At Shadow Ridge, there are students who are exceptionally talented in what they do, from sports, to singing and everything in between. One Mustang who has proved her exceptional talent, is senior Emily Grimes who is an amazing artist. Recently Grimes entered, and won the CSN Gallery Award competition and took first place.

“I won the CSN Gallery Award which basically means that CSN said my picture was the best. It was awesome! I literally couldn’t stop smiling,” Grimes says.

Emily Grimes and Mr. Counts with her certificate

Grimes was able to find out about this competition through Shadow Ridge teacher Mr. Counts.

“The competition is called Voice Art Competition and I got involved because my teacher Mr. Counts tells us about all sorts of art competition,” shares Grimes.

This competition gave artists a category they had to represent within their piece, and Grimes was able to capture her category beautifully.

Grimes adds, “There were 3 categories. there was Conceptual Surrealism, Contemporary Issues, and Self Discovery. I had Self Discovery.”

She tells a story through her piece displaying various emotions through her color and symbolism.

“Well, I wanted to use a lot of different colors and make it really chaotic because that’s what it feels like trying to come up with a new idea. Also, the tear drop and flame are there to represent frustration and anger,” Grimes says.

Her submission contained nothing less than copious amounts of thought and planning to make her vision come true.

Her amazing piece entered the competition, and was then displayed to be seen within the gallery.

“So I was planning on entering a photo for the voice art competition and I had the idea to go out to the tunnels behind school with a canvas with a bunch of crazy colors and shapes and punch a hole in it for my face obviously,” Grimes says. “Then I was like hey I have to add on to this photo somehow so I added the handprint with the stitching around it and then a teardrop. So the name of the photo is “Blocked” and basically it was supposed to represent an art block and having too many random ideas that don’t fit together.”

“So basically we took a picture of my picture and then my teacher submitted it somehow online and then judges looked at it and voted on who won and the pictures that won are the ones that were displayed in the gallery.”
