The Shadow Ridge High School Winter Guard is an indoor competitive sport that consists of a unique blend of dance, athleticism, and visual artistry. Winter Guard shows are typically around 3-7 minutes long so it calls for a lot of memorization, just like during marching season with the band, except their music is coming from a track instead. All equipment used, like flags, rifles, and sabers, are designed to help students tell a story through movement and music. The Shadow Ridge team spends countless hours perfecting complex routines, tough tosses and catches, and synchronizing every step and spin. The theme for this year’s show is “Let it Rain” meaning, no one is going to stop them from doing what they love.
Each member plays a vital role in the show where every subtle gesture contributes to the overall narrative of their story. Rehearsals are run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30pm with competitions being held on Saturdays. While competitions are not every Saturday, that doesn’t stop students from putting in the hard work at rehearsals. Their commitment and dedication is fixed, driven by their passion to create a beautiful and impactful show.
In order for students to prepare for their show, it is not only important that they know their choreo, but they are connected with each other as well. It is important that they bond with each other because it builds trust among everyone, creates more productivity because they can communicate and share new ideas efficiently, as well as enhances the team’s dynamic. Whether they were friends before joining the team or became friends at a random rehearsal, they all have shared challenges and hurdles to overcome, and everyone’s individual growth contributes to the team as a whole. They can all agree that the bond between everyone is built on mutual respect, encouragement, and pushing their limits.
Sophomore and Color Guard Captain, Dylan Eecklor stated, “This season has been great! We have been doing really well in competition and recently got first place in our division. The most fun part has been bonding with the team and learning together and the most challenging part this year has been transitioning all of our equipment and tarps on and off with such a small number of people.”
As they take the floor, representing Shadow Ridge High School, the team has to remember every rehearsal leading up to that moment. While nerves can be high, it is important for the team to stay calm so that they can be as expressive while performing as they can. Their performances are not just about competitions but friendships, storytelling, and making sure they leave a lasting impression on the audience.
Eecklor stated, “I definitely get nervous! I get giddy with anticipation but I have to remind myself that I’m going to perform my best and whatever happens will happen. No matter what I do, I will do it with a smile and 100% confidence.”
Shadow Ridge Winter Guard comes with incredibly talented and dedicated students who will continue to succeed and strive through their season.
