Choir is often seen as just another elective, but for many students, it becomes a defining part of their high school experience. Beyond learning how to sing, students in choir gain musical skills, personal growth, and a strong sense of belonging that extends far beyond the classroom. One of the biggest benefits of choir is the musical development students experience. Choir helps students improve their vocal abilities, no matter their starting point, while also opening doors to future opportunities such as college music scholarships.
Choir director, James Halvorson stated, “No matter where they are in their journey, students can use choir as a regular voice lesson. Students that are taking advantage of choir are now going to college on a music scholarship that can help pay for their education or at least pay for the costs of staying in choir in college.”
In addition to opening doors for future opportunities, choir also helps students build a strong foundation in music literacy. Learning how to read and understand music allows students to grow as musicians and gives them skills they can use long after high school, regardless of whether they continue performing professionally.
“Music is like any foreign language. It takes time to learn it, but when you develop the ability to read, you can explore music for the rest of your life.” He continued, “Singing is the one musical skill you can do your entire life. You don’t need to buy an instrument (you already have it). As long as you have the desire to carry a tune, you can develop a valuable voice for any ensemble.”

While choir helps students grow musically, its impact extends far beyond technical skills. The program also encourages personal responsibility, focus, and a willingness to work together toward a shared goal, setting it apart from many other electives.
Halvorson stated, “Any elective is good because it provides students an opportunity to follow their passions and see what may drive them to succeed in the future. I think there are a few aspects that are unique to music and choir specifically. For one, students have to learn about the power of a little personal sacrifice for the greater good. That can be an amazing release from the burden of the day.”
Choir is a life changing experience for anyone who is looking for a chance to challenge themselves and immediately reward themselves for their accomplishments. Choir is for everyone. With opportunities to grow musically and build confidence, Shadow Ridge choir offers students a space where effort is rewarded and every voice matters.
