Sometimes, the most unexpected talents come from the most unlikely places. What began as a humorous Christmas present for this student eventually turned into a fun skill that continues to surprise people years later.
“I got a mini Etch A Sketch for Christmas as a joke, a year or two ago,” senior, Layla Cook stated. “I tried it for the first time, and after about 15 minutes I came out with a Bob Ross style scenic picture.”
That first attempt was not only unexpected, but impressive enough to leave a lasting impression. However, rather than becoming a daily pastime, the Etch A Sketch settled into a much more casual role, becoming something that would resurface occasionally, usually when curiosity or boredom struck.
“I don’t really practice it or play with it often,” Cook explained. “But when I do, they usually come out about the same accuracy as before.”
Despite the lack of regular practice, the drawings have remained consistently detailed. Over time, familiarity with the toy has allowed for small improvements, even without intentional effort. Each new attempt feels slightly more efficient than the last.
“I can usually do it a little bit quicker each time,” she continued.
Instead of being part of a routine, the mini Etch A Sketch has turned into an occasional creative outlet that appears only a few times throughout the year.
“I probably randomly pick it up about two to four times a year for the past two years and draw some scenery out,” Cook said.
What makes the results even more surprising is the lack of any formal method behind them. There are no practiced techniques or learned tricks involved.
“I don’t really have any techniques when it comes to playing with this doohickey,” she added.

While the Etch A Sketch is entertaining, it hasn’t replaced more traditional forms of art. Pencil and paper are still Cooks’ preferred tools when it comes to drawing. However, the mini Etch a Sketch offers some surprise and humor in her life..
“I think I’d rather draw with pencil and paper,” she explained. “But this is a random, funny thing I can pull out of my pocket and confuse people with.”
Though it started as a joke, the mini Etch A Sketch has become a unique talent that doesn’t require practice or perfection. Instead, it serves as a reminder that creativity can show up in unexpected ways, sometimes when it’s least expected.
