One of the most common fears today is arachnophobia, the fear of spiders. Along with spiders, many people are also afraid of bugs in general and would prefer to stay as far away from them as possible. However, this fear is not shared by Shadow Ridge High School senior Jonathan Sanchez, who has turned what many see as frightening into a personal passion.
Sanchez owns multiple tarantulas and also keeps millipedes, along with other invertebrates that many people might find unsettling. While most students may cringe at the thought of owning spiders or insects, Sanchez finds them fascinating and rewarding to care for. His interest began at a young age and was influenced by time spent outdoors.

“Growing up I had a friend. I would always be outside looking for bugs and other animals with him. From then on I went with it and have always been interested in all types of animals and decided that I wanted to start keeping tarantulas; it then grew into me keeping all types of invertebrates like millipedes, scorpions, praying mantises, and centipedes,” Sanchez said.
Over time, what started as curiosity grew into a serious hobby. Sanchez takes great pride in caring for his animals and learning all about their behaviors, habitats, and needs. He believes that many people fear bugs simply because they do not understand them.
At Shadow Ridge High School, Sanchez’s unusual hobby often sparks conversations among classmates. Some are surprised to learn that tarantulas and other invertebrates can be kept safely and responsibly. Others admit they still feel uneasy but are intrigued by his knowledge and calm attitude toward the animals.
Sanchez hopes that by talking about his experiences, people can begin to see bugs and spiders in a different light.
While arachnophobia and insect related fears remain common, Sanchez’s story shows that fear can sometimes be replaced with fascination. His passion highlights the importance of understanding nature rather than avoiding it.
As Sanchez looks toward the future, his interest in animals continues to grow. Whether or not others share his enthusiasm.
