At Shadow Ridge High School, senior Dylan Bailey has become a name synonymous with perseverance and excellence in cross country. A dedicated runner who has already earned multiple awards, Bailey’s story is one of resilience, discipline, and passion for the sport.
“My older brother ran cross country so I decided to try it in middle school,” Bailey recalls. “I liked it enough to try it again freshman year.” That decision set him on a path filled with memorable races, grueling training sessions, and lessons that extend far beyond the track.
Some of his most unforgettable moments came in competition. “I’ve had a lot of fun and interesting races,” Bailey says. “Woodbridge was memorable because I ran sweepstakes and finished 3 miles in 15 minutes, 20 seconds. State championship races were also special because we won state.”

Those victories cemented his place among the top runners in his program, but the road wasn’t always smooth.
The biggest obstacle came off the course. “The biggest challenge I faced was getting my gallbladder removed,” Bailey explains. “It took over a year to get diagnosed, and recovery was long. I got set back a lot and wasn’t able to run to my full potential due to the pain. I overcame it through lots of patience, learning how to deal with pain, and thanks to my amazing coaches.”
That resilience is matched by his motivation. “I know if I give up now I’ll regret it later and would be letting myself, coaches, and teammates down. It’s only a few minutes of pain, and when I’m done it’ll go away eventually.”
Training is no less demanding. “Our training becomes very intense during mid-season and varsity season,” Bailey says. “I’m running up to 55 miles a week, and most of those miles are high intensity. After practice I want nothing but sleep, so it’s really important to take care of my body and let it recover.”
Despite the grind, cross country has shaped his high school years in ways he never expected. “Being part of cross country has made my high school experience a lot better. This sport has taught me a lot of life lessons and let me meet cool people. High school would stink without it.”
Bailey sums up his philosophy with a runner’s mantra: “Courage to start, strength to endure, resolve to finish. Everyone is in pain and tired. It is about who can push through that pain and keep fighting when things get hard that truly makes a great runner. Take your fast days fast and slow days slow. Most importantly, don’t forget to drink chocolate milk and eat ice cream.”
