When it comes to swimming, senior Isis Gwin is splashing the competition. She joined the Shadow Ridge Swim Team her freshman year because her upperclassman friends introduced her to the sport and encouraged her to do it. Since then, Gwin has continued to grow and excel.
She has always loved swimming and is happy that she’s gotten to do it all through high school. One of Gwin’s most important meets was at regionals last year, when she was on the 200 Freestyle Relay. In the race Gwin and her team swam 20 seconds faster than what their set time was, which was a huge win for them.
While the regional swim meet was a great race for her, another one of Gwin’s highlights was at a swim meet on the day of her Prom. Gwin made regional time for the 200 and 500 freestyle races on the same day, which is a big accomplishment. Gwin did not think she was a distance swimmer before those two races, but she proved herself wrong when she swam incredible times.
Gwin has many supporters, but her biggest fans are her family.
“My biggest supporters are my parents, especially my dad,” Gwin says. “I think he has come to almost every meet since my first one! He’s awesome at tracking my times and giving me advice.”
One of Gwin’s favorite parts about swimming is her team. While swimming itself makes her happy, Gwin has a special bond with her swim teammates.
“We have ‘swim dinners’ every Friday night, and that’s when we bring a bunch of food and carb up for the meet the next day. It’s great team bonding,” Gwin comments.
Gwin’s role model on the team is junior Madison Arner. She admires Arner for her speed, technique, and her nice personality. After high school Gwin definitely wants to keep swimming, whether it be on the next level or on an intramural team.
One of Gwin’s teammates and best friend, senior Lila Brough, knows that Gwin works hard, and it has paid off.
“Isis is an amazing swimmer!” Brough said. “She is so dedicated and truly loves the sport. She constantly pushes herself and has grown so much since I joined the team. Just this last year she went to regionals and was a part of the A relay, which is an awesome accomplishment. I love swimming with her and can’t wait to see where she goes this season!”
