Last month, all Las Vegas high schools got together to celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of Black Student Union in Nevada. The conference is always held at the end of the year for schools to recap their achievements throughout the school year.
While BSU is an after school club, the importance in participating and contributing to the group is an admirable thing to be a part of. The purpose of Black Student Union is to spread Black culture and raise awareness of social justice in an educational way on and off of campus.
Every school that attended participated by making presentations showing their involvement in the community in the name of BSU, presenting all of their contributions over the 2025-2026 school year, including events like community service and performances in respect of Black history.

The Black Student Union conference was on March 27th from 11am to 6pm, at Palo Verde High School.
Palo Verde greeted the arriving schools with their band, a meal ticket for food, and a lottery ticket for a later event in the day. Students were met with a treasure hunt centered around their knowledge of Black history.
The ideas of events came from Palo Verde’s BSU members, and the visiting students enjoyed the activities they had planned for the day. Every student who attended the meeting got the chance to enter a raffle that had prizes for practical use or rewards to show off.
High schools weren’t the only attendees, as some middle schools are starting their own Black Student Unions for the younger aged audiences that may be interested.

The conference was sponsored by the Las Vegas Raiders who provided generous gift bags to win, with some of the players themselves coming to the meeting to talk to the students on any topic that came to mind.
Palo Verde also reached out to a small group of native Africans who presented their talents of singing and dancing. These performers engaged the crowd with singing and clapping; the students definitely got pumped up.
Since the conference was also made to be a social event, the students got chances to converse with students from other schools, getting to know those who have the same interest as them. Collaborating on ideas was definitely a benefit of the conference.
Even though the meeting was meant to be a fun social event for the students, many scholarship donors came to the meeting to offer their advice and services to BSU members first hand. There are many organizations who like to give back to members of BSU to encourage future success in the students.

To end the meeting, all attending seniors represented their schools by taking a picture in front of a poster with their advisors. All BSU seniors were awarded with a medal that they can wear and display at graduation.
Black Student Union is a group that is always striving to prove themselves above all. The students who are a part of BSU stand to uphold the image of all African Americans.
As BSU membership continues to grow, it will always remain an important part of the Black community. Representing African heritage and culture, it serves as a source of pride not only for Black students but for the broader community as well.
