Learning a new language can be an exciting experience, as it opens the door to a new culture and a broader understanding of people around the world. At Shadow Ridge, students have the opportunity to study Japanese, French, or Spanish, giving them a wide variety of options when choosing a language to learn. With three different programs available, many students wonder which language is the most popular.
Spanish is the most widely taken language at Shadow Ridge. With many Spanish-speaking students living in Las Vegas, it makes sense that students are often drawn to the language. Learning Spanish allows students to better connect with classmates and members of the community.

Spanish teacher, Ms. Perri Crane, emphasizes the importance of understanding people who may not be fluent in English but are still an important part of American culture. By learning their language, students also learn about their culture. Being able to communicate and understand one another is especially important in a diverse country like the United States, as it helps bridge the gap between people from different backgrounds.
“When I’m learning Spanish, I like understanding what different things mean and trying to make connections from Vulgar Latin to modern-day Spanish. The classroom environment is fun, especially because learning with others is a big help for people like myself,” said Jaydah Giles, a freshman at Shadow Ridge.

Another language option for students is French. The class is open to anyone interested in learning the French language and culture. Students experience a combination of textbook-based instruction and interactive learning led by Madame Spanier.
Madame Spanier is known for creating a welcoming classroom environment. She often greets students with a bright smile and works to make them feel comfortable while learning the language.
Spanier frequently incorporates visual learning into her lessons and assignments. Using images, keywords, and other visual representations helps students remember vocabulary and understand the meanings of words and objects more effectively.

“I took Spanish classes in the past but had always wanted to learn another language. I found similar aspects between the two languages and can proudly say that both have been entertaining to learn,” said Zaelynn Lane, a senior at Shadow Ridge.
The third language offered at Shadow Ridge is Japanese. This year marks the final year of Japanese teacher Mr. Bertsch, but the class continues to be an intriguing and unique language option for students.
With its focus on East Asian culture, the Japanese course offers a very different experience compared to the other language classes. Mr. Bertsch has a strong appreciation for Japanese culture and traditions, and he enjoys sharing that passion with his students.
He also uses a hands-on approach in his teaching. Mr. Bertsch often transitions between classroom lectures, small group activities, and one-on-one support to help students better understand the material.
Japanese has become a popular choice among students who are interested in East Asian culture and want to deepen their understanding of the traditions and language they admire.
“Normally, the more engaging the teacher is, the more likely I am to apply myself in their class, and I think Mr. Bertsch does that exceedingly well,” said Madison McDaniel, a freshman at Shadow Ridge.
Exploring another country’s culture and traditions can broaden a person’s perspective and encourage greater appreciation for the diversity of the world. Learning another language is one way students can step into that new world. The teachers who lead these classes provide more than language instruction, they also introduce students to the cultures and traditions that shape those languages.
