For most high school students, Saturday morning usually involves sleeping in or catching up on shows. But for millions of juniors and seniors across the country, several Saturdays a year are defined by calculated pacing and the high-stakes pressure of the ACT. While any score jump is celebrated, there is one number that exists in the realm of academic folklore: the 36.
To understand the weight of a 36, one has to look at the sheer math of the competition. According to recent data from ACT, Inc., the average composite score hovers around 19.5 to 20.8. To achieve a 36, a student must essentially reach the summit of a very steep mountain.
“I’m just shooting for somewhere in the 20s at this point,” junior Sarah Fisher says.
Out of the roughly 1.3 million students who take the exam annually, only about one-quarter of one percent (.25%) earn the top mark.

A common misconception among students is that they need a “perfect” raw score, meaning zero questions missed, to get a 36. In reality, the ACT uses a scaling system. Because some test forms are slightly more difficult than others, the “curve” may allow a student to miss one or even two questions in a section like Math or Science and still round up to a 36 for that specific subject.
However, the Composite Score is the average of the four required sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science). This means that even if a student excels in three areas, a single slip-up in the fourth can pull the average down to a 35.
“I know I can do the reading section but I’m worried my math score will bring my whole test down just because I’m slow,” stated junior, Sarah Watts.
At this level of testing, the difference between a 35 and a 36 isn’t necessarily a difference in intelligence; it’s often a test of stamina and precision.
“It’s less about knowing everything and more about not making mistakes,” says Ryen Hughes, a junior at Shadow Ridge who spent six months prepping for the exam. “The ACT is a marathon. By the time you get to the Science section, your brain is fried. That’s usually where the ‘silly mistakes’ happen that cost you that perfect score.”
The scarcity of the 36 has created a massive industry of tutors, boot camps, and strategy guides. Many students take the test three or four times, hoping the “superscore” Gods smile upon them. Yet, for all the prestige, admissions officers often remind students that a 36 is not a golden ticket.
While a 36 is a monumental achievement that can trigger automatic full-ride scholarships at certain state universities, elite colleges often view a 34, 35, and 36 as essentially the same tier of excellence.
For the few who do hit that elusive mark, it remains a badge of honor, a rare moment where preparation, timing, and a little bit of luck aligned perfectly under the ticking clock of a classroom wall. For everyone else? Remember that 99.7% of the world is all together in the same situation.
