In the beginning of January in hopes to become them best selves, at Shadow Ridge students make New Years resolutions by setting goals to accomplish.
Sophomore Kaylee Lane says, “My New Year’s resolution is to get better grades, so I can play sports.”
Like Lane, other sophomores are using the start of the year as an opportunity to refocus and set meaningful goals for a new beginning. New Year’s resolutions vary from student to student, reflecting different priorities and values.
Lane explains, “Last year, I didn’t lock in on my grades, and I couldn’t play softball, but this year I’m hoping I can change that.”
Many student’s goals consist of working on school work, turning in work on time, or getting better grades.
“As long as I study more and to pay attention in my classes, I think I can do good with this,” Lane said.
While some students focus on improving performance in school or athletics, others are setting goals centered on personal growth and discipline.
Sophomore Kason Leavitt states, “My New Year’s resolution is to be more dedicated in sports, goals, and good habits.”
“I think it’s important to make New Year’s resolutions because it’s a healthy way to challenge yourself to be a better person while also having others trying to do the same,” explains Leavitt.
Many students share similar motivations as they enter the New Year, especially when it comes to balancing academics, sports, and personal responsibility.
“I hope to be better at making good and healthy goals for myself. I will better myself through dedication, which will help me achieve my goals,” said Leavitt.
Dedication, commitment, and consistent work will allow everyone to achieve their New Year’s goals in no time!
“My goal for the year is to read the Bible in one whole year,” states sophomore Krystian Retialo-Ross.

Religious resolutions are also a big goal for the New Year for many. Reading the Bible would be a huge accomplishment for someone who is dedicated and willing to put the consistency and effort into it.
“I’m going to have to stay consistent and dedicated to accomplish my New Year’s Resolution. It’s definitely going to be hard work, but I know it’s possible,” Retialo-Ross explains.
Overall, students agree that setting resolutions helps them stay motivated and accountable throughout the year. Whether the goal is school, athletic, or personal developmental success, many believe consistency and commitment are key to achieving their goals.
