At Shadow Ridge High School, a group called Mothers on Patrol helps keep the parking lot safe and organized. This group is made up of campus security monitors who are also mothers and regularly patrol the parking lot. Their role has become extremely important due to the recent construction and the updated road on Decatur, which has caused frequent traffic jams. With hundreds of students and staff using the parking lot each day, the area can become chaotic and stressful. The Mothers on Patrol work to improve safety and reduce confusion, helping prevent problems that come from impatient driving and heavy congestion. The traffic issues have even caused major problems for students, making the Mothers on Patrol a very valuable group that keep things running smoothly.

“Some travelers just don’t pay attention. As Mothers on Patrol, we patrol the area and make sure students are safe because it can get really congested here, and there’s a lot of traffic. As mothers, we pay attention to the small details, the little things, that can snowball into bigger road issues and accidents,” Elisha McAfee, a campus security monitor and Mother on Patrol, states.
Due to the constant congestion and unpredictable driving, staff members in this group often witness how quickly small mistakes can turn into larger problems. Mothers on Patrol help ensure student safety by aiding in traffic flow and preventing unsafe driving.
“One time I was stuck in traffic for 40 minutes and some people started to get impatient and force their way through other cars,” Logan Low, junior states. “I have also been late to important events because of how long it takes to get out of the parking lot.”
Students have also experienced the negative effects of traffic in the parking lot firsthand, especially during dismissal when more delays occur. Frustrated drivers are a reason Mothers on Patrol are important supervisors in the parking lot. They carefully keep an eye out for recklessness.
“As a newer driver, navigating through a crowded parking lot is a bit difficult, but knowing there are campus security monitors who care for us makes it feel safer and way more manageable,” Braydon Navarroza, junior states.
Even newer drivers have noticed how challenging the environment can be, especially when trying to stay calm and aware in a crowded space. Support from campus monitors helps ease some of that stress and creates a safer parking lot.
Overall, Mothers on Patrol is an amazing group of campus monitors and mothers. They maintain order and safety even during the busiest parts of the school day. Their attention to detail and consistent presence help reduce risk and keep the parking lot running more smoothly for everyone.
