At Shadow Ridge High School, Smart Snacks Standards are implemented for all food sold on campus during the 2025-2026 school year. These standards are a federal requirement for foods sold outside the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Across Clark County School District schools, including Shadow Ridge, outside vendors must follow specific nutrition guidelines and calorie limits for the items they provide. These rules apply to all foods and beverages sold to students during the school day, including à la carte cafeteria items, student store snacks, vending machine products, and some fundraiser items. The purpose of these standards is to help students choose healthier foods and drinks that give them the energy they need to get through the day while making a healthy choice.

To qualify as a Smart Snack, foods must meet basic nutrition guidelines. A snack should be made mostly from whole grains, or have a fruit, vegetable, dairy, or protein as its main ingredient, or include at least a ¼ cup of fruits or vegetables. Beverages must also stay within calorie, sodium, fats, and sugar limits. For drinks, plain water, low-fat or fat-free milk, and 100% fruit or vegetable juice.
“I do think that smart snacking has improved how students snack or what they eat because ultimately, it’s a healthier choice for them,” Assistant Principal, Stephanie Jordan states.
School administrators and staff have noticed the positive effects that Smart Snack Standards have on students’ eating habits and overall health. When Smart Snacks are available to students, they consume more healthy foods and beverages during the school day, making the healthy choice an easy choice.
“I like the new snacks and food from the vendors, they’re good for when you want something healthy and light to eat at school,” Emma Cale-Blake, junior, states.
Students have also shared positive opinions about the changes in snack and lunch options available on campus. The variety of healthier alternatives offered has made it easier for students to find foods they enjoy while still making nutritious choices. Many students appreciate having more options that include fruits, whole grains, and lower-sugar snacks which help them stay energized without feeling weighed down during the day.
“I do miss the old snacks in the vending machines, however they are now nutritious and healthier for us,” Andrew Call, junior states.
Some students have also expressed mixed feelings about the new snack options in the vending machines and how they have changed significantly from last year, however, they understand that these new changes are meant to improve student nutrition and overall health.
Overall, Smart Snack Standards have improved food options on campus, helping students make healthier choices while still providing snacks they can enjoy.
