With prom quickly approaching, Shadow Ridge juniors and seniors are preparing for a carefree night. Prom is often seen as one of the most exciting nights of high school, but the preparation can be stressful and overwhelming without guidance or proper organization. From finding the right dress to making plans with friends, prom prep involves more than what appears online. For many students, the weeks before prom are filled with decisions, appointments, and pressure to make everything turn out perfectly.
One of the biggest parts of prom prep is choosing what to wear. Dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories can take a long time to find, especially when trying to match current trends or personal style. Some students spend hours online or go to multiple stores before finding the right look. The cost can also be a major factor, since formal outfits are often expensive and usually not worn again. Because of this, many students look for ways to save money, such as borrowing from friends or shopping for cheaper alternatives such as thrifting. Prom on a budget has become more common.Â

Senior Venice Nevine Velayo stated, “The whole thing is overwhelming but I think that it’ll be worth it when prom night is finally here and I no longer have to worry about the things I need in order to have a good night.”Â
Hair, nails, makeup, and other details often need to be scheduled in advance, and salons can fill up quickly as prom gets closer. Trying to fit everything into one day can be too much, especially when weighing in other factors such as time management. Some students are balancing school, work, and extracurricular activities. Prom is just another thing added to their plate. The stress of it all may sometimes take away from the excitement of the dance itself.
“I’m a last minute person. I constantly think about the days leading up to prom without actually doing anything. I haven’t even bought my ticket yet,” junior Janelle Fiamordzi said.
Prom expectations are often influenced by social media and movies. The media doesn’t accurately represent what students go through when imagining prom. The night is imagined as flawless, with picture perfect photos, smooth plans, and no stress. In reality, things do not always go as planned. Dresses can arrive late if purchasing online, plans can change at the last minute, and money becomes a problem for many.
Planning for prom also includes planning with friends, which can be complicated. Students have to plan a ride ahead of time, decide on dinner reservations, etc. Some choose to rent limos or party buses, while others decide to carpool.Â
“The planning can be stressful but I’m excited about prom. It’s the best time to not have to think about school work and really just let go of your worries for the night, especially for us seniors,” Nevine Velayo stated.
