Members of Shadow Ridge’s Student Council recently had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C, where they experienced history, leadership and teamwork in one of the most important cities in the United States.
This trip allowed students to explore famous landmarks, learn more about how the U.S government works, and build a stronger connection with fellow student leaders. This trip helped the students grow as leaders while representing the school.

Student Council Advisor, Rebecca Coyle stated, ¨The purpose is for members of Shadow Ridge’s Student Council and NHS to experience learning from and sharing ideas with other students from around the world to help make all high school campuses a better place for everyone.¨
In Washington, the students attended sessions connected to the national student council organization and participated in activities designed to help them bring new ideas and leadership skills back to campus. These experiences gave them a deeper understanding of how student leadership organizations work across the country.
One of the biggest highlights for students was simply being able to explore the city together. Walking through historic areas and seeing important monuments gave students a new appreciation for American History.
Student Council member Dana Marchenkoo stated, “I think my favorite part of DC was spending time with my best friends and forming closer bonds with the other members in Student Council.”
Not every student was eligible to attend the conference. Coyle explained that this opportunity was for student leaders who have demonstrated commitment to service and leadership at Shadow Ridge. Students who attended had to be Executive Board members of the school’s Student Council or a member of National Honor Society.
Preparing for this trip also required dedication and teamwork from the students. In order to help cover for travel and participation, students organized fundraising efforts on campus. One of their most popular methods was selling smoothies during lunch periods.

Beyond sightseeing, the trip was also an important learning experience. Students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the United States government and its history.
Marchenkoo stated, “This trip made me see the bigger picture in our Student Council and just how many people are involved and love it. It inspired me to do my own workshop at our next conference too.”
The Washington D.C trip gave student government members an opportunity to learn, grow, and represent their school. Between exploring historic landmarks, meeting other student leaders, and strengthening friendships, the experience was both educational and memorable. For many students, this trip will remain one of the most meaningful moments of their time in student government.
