Shadow Ridge High School Cybersecurity is preparing to offer a new Advanced Placement class that can open new doors for students who are interested in technology and cybersecurity. Advanced Placement Cybersecurity will give students the chance to earn college credit while learning skills that are becoming more and more prominent in today’s world.
Cybersecurity advisor Lloyd Mann stated, “Advanced Placement courses are run by the College Board. Two years ago I found out that the College Board would be adding AP Cybersecurity in 2026-2027. Since I really enjoy teaching Cybersecurity, I decided to get involved with this opportunity. I applied for the pilot program two years ago and was selected.”
Mann attended training in Denver to prepare for the course. He also attended additional training in California, for another upcoming class, AP Networking. Advanced placement Networking is expected to be an option for the 2027-2028 school year. Students who enroll in AP Cybersecurity can expect a hands-on learning experience on how computers and networks work.
“AP Cybersecurity is an opportunity to get college credit and learn cyber skills. It is a deep dive into how computers work.” He explained, “It is very similar to the CTE Cyber track we offer now, just with an emphasis on a career in cyber security. If you have ever wanted to learn how to make computers more secure or how a network works this is the class for you.”
The course will give students the opportunity to earn an industry cybersecurity certification, which could help them stand out in both college and career paths. The class will differ from other technology classes by focusing specifically on protecting systems and preventing cyber attacks.
Mann continued, “Cybersecurity is a skill that everyone needs to have in the modern age. Digital natives practically live on their devices and yet they are just as susceptible to hacking attacks as anyone else. The focus of Cybersecurity and the AP Cybersecurity class is to train students on how to prevent computer attacks. It also teaches the skills needed for students to prepare themselves for a high paying, possible six figure job.”

There are opportunities in the military and college to use the cyber skills students can acquire in AP Cybersecurity. It is a good career path, with starting salaries beginning at $65,000 to $120,000. With new AP technology classes in the works, Shadow Ridge hopes to give students a chance to challenge themselves, earn college credit, and prepare for future careers.
