Members join DECA for a variety of reasons. Some are drawn to the competitive aspect and the opportunity to advance to state and international competitions. Others value the networking opportunities or the sense of community the club provides.
“It was my first year and my first competition at that. Being able to get top eight is incredible, it was surreal,” said senior Chadley Rourke. “Now I have a chance to compete at a national level, and the experience I’ve gotten from one competition is priceless. I wish I knew about the club earlier because my one and only year has been so impactful.”
Fourteen Shadow Ridge students attended the state conference this year, with the majority earning medals or trophies. Among them, junior Connor Schilder captured first place in his role-play event and earned a state championship glass trophy.

“SCDC was an amazing experience,” Schilder said. “I got to meet people from all over Nevada and make memories with everyone I met. The competition was challenging, but it felt great to win and come out on top.”
Several students also qualified for the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), which will be held in Atlanta later this year.
“I am so proud of our DECA students and the way they performed at SCDC,” Mrs. McCoy said. “They put their hearts into their events, and it showed with so many of them making it to the stage during awards. What stands out most is their maturity and the way they carry themselves. They are respectful and supportive of one another. They represented Shadow Ridge with pride.”
For the graduating seniors, the medals and trophies represent more than competitive success, they serve as lasting reminders of leadership, teamwork, and dedication.
DECA meets every Monday after school, and advisors Mrs. McCoy and Mr. Lewis welcome any students interested in learning more. While the competitive season may be winding down, the chapter continues to prepare for next year and encourages new members to join.
As this year comes to a close, Shadow Ridge’s DECA students leave SCDC with awards in hand and memories that will last far beyond high school.
