As the school year moves into its second semester, students are already being asked the question of what classes they are taking next year. Registration for the upcoming school year begins soon, beginning right after students return from winter break, and Shadow Ridge counselors are encouraging students to stay informed, organized, and thoughtful throughout the process. Students will begin requesting classes on January 8 through a Google Form sent directly to their school email. After submitting their first requests, students will meet individually with their counselor to finalize course selections. These meetings will take place by grade level, starting with incoming ninth graders and then moving on to upperclassmen.
“The best advice I can give is to pick classes based on what you’re interested in, not what your friends are choosing,” Shadow Ridge counselor Lisa Hebb shared. “Look for classes that spark your interest or could teach you skills that connect to a future career.”
For many students, choosing classes can feel overwhelming, especially when balancing interests, graduation requirements, and future plans. Hebb emphasizes that course selection should be a personal decision, and students should focus on their future and their career goals, and not what their peers are choosing.

Hebb continues, “Communication is key! If you’re trying to earn awards like the Honored Scholar or Mustang Medallion, it’s important you compare what classes you’ve taken to what is needed for the award. And, it’s very important you communicate with your counselor about your plan to earn an award. That way we can make sure you’re effectively making choices to reach your goal.”
Class choices also play a significant role in meeting graduation requirements and earning academic awards. Staying on top of deadlines is another major factor in a smooth registration process. Counselors are encouraging students to complete each step on time, regularly check their email, and carefully read all information sent to them.
“All students will be able request classes on January 8th using the Google Form that they will get in an email from their counselor. Students should check their email and read the information that your counselor sends. They should also talk to teachers and parents about what they are planning to take.”
As registration approaches, Shadows counselors hope students will take the process seriously and use available resources to make informed decisions. With careful planning and open communication, students can set themselves up for a successful school year.
