Shadow Ridge High School offers countless opportunities for students to grow both academically and personally, whether through classroom learning or involvement in extracurricular activities. One of the most influential clubs on campus is DECA, an organization that equips students with practical business skills and prepares them for future career success.
DECA, which operates at the international level, is designed to support the next generation of leaders in key business fields. As DECA advisor Kim McCoy explains, “DECA is an international association that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Through competitive events, leadership conferences, and networking opportunities, DECA provides students with real-world experiences that complement their academic education.” By blending classroom concepts with hands-on involvement, DECA helps students gain confidence and competence in areas critical to today’s workforce.

McCoy emphasizes that DECA goes far beyond learning from a textbook. “Students gain hands-on experience in marketing and business concepts, helping them apply theoretical knowledge in real-world situations; leadership development; networking and scholarship opportunities; and résumé building,” she said. These experiences allow students to transform abstract ideas into practical skills, preparing them for both college and career pathways.
One of the most appealing aspects of DECA is the exposure it provides to different business related career options. According to McCoy, “Giving them insight into their interests and potential areas of study; students can participate in state, national, and international competitions, which help develop critical thinking and problem solving skills; awards recognition; community involvement; and personal growth.” The diverse range of activities ensures that every student can find an area that excites them, whether they are drawn to marketing campaigns, financial analysis, hospitality management, or entrepreneurship.
Competitions are a major highlight of the program, offering students the chance to test their skills against peers from around the world. These events challenge participants to think creatively, communicate effectively, and perform under pressure, all skills that are essential beyond high school. In addition to competitions, DECA members often receive recognition for their achievements, engage in community service projects, and build lasting friendships.
Through the DECA Club, Shadow Ridge continues its commitment to providing meaningful growth opportunities for students. By combining professional development with engaging, real-world challenges, DECA empowers students to discover their strengths, build their résumés, and prepare for promising futures in the world of business.
