Students who have walked through the 300’s hallway on Thursday afternoons, might have stumbled across Swing Dance Club, one of Shadow Ridge High School’s most lively and welcoming clubs. For the members, it’s more than just a dance club. It’s a place to unwind and make new friends. The club began about 10 years ago, with students from the LDS church deciding to try to make an impact on Shadows’ community through swing dance.
French teacher, Regina Spanier stated, “A long time ago, The swing dancers from the LDS church asked if they could start a club here and share their dancing with everyone. They asked me to be the supervisor. I told them that I did not have those skills, but a student said that they had excellent instructors, and that they would teach anyone interested!”
As the club has grown and changed over the years, it has relied on dedication. Though the energy and enthusiasm have stayed strong, the club, like most, hasn’t been without its challenges. Spanier explained that the swing dance club faces the realities of students’ busy schedules.
“We have lost some involvement this year. Some members are seniors and many have jobs. I wish there were more members, but I am here every Thursday for the club.” Spanier stated, “There are also many conflicts with other clubs and JFROTC.”
Despite these obstacles, the heart of the club stays the same. Spanier continues to see the positive impact it makes on students. Beyond the numbers, she emphasizes the value of the experience itself, and even with fewer members, the club continues to be a rewarding space for students. She sees value not only in the dancing itself, but in the confidence and the sense of community these students build each week.

“They get to learn how to do varied moves to swing dancing from easy to difficult (lifts!).” She stated, “Plus, it is a social club where you can meet new friends and let off some steam! As with everything I am involved with in teaching, it is all about the students. They are awesome!”
As Swing Dance Club continues to move forward and improve, Spanier hopes to see more students attend. The club is rooted in connection and creativity. Whether students come to master new skills or simply to take a break from the pressures of school, Swing Dance Club offers a place where everyone is welcomed and encouraged.
