Under the guidance of teacher Kevin Bennett, Shadow Ridge High School’s Chess Club has become one of the most sought after clubs on campus. Bennett’s ever growing passion for chess has promoted a welcoming environment where students of all skill levels can learn and compete. He encourages students who have enhanced critical and strategic thinking to join and try out! Chess Club is held every Tuesday in room 832
Bennett teaches the students sportsmanship and making sure the students know how important it is to be respectful to competitors. The club not only teaches the fundamentals of chess but also critical thinking, problem-solving, and sportsmanship skills. Members develop valuable skills that extend beyond the chessboard, enhancing their academic performance and decision making abilities in everyday life.
“Sportmanship is incredibly important,” Bennett states, “more important than the game itself. Shaking hands before and after the game is a very important part of playing.”
With Bennett’s leadership, the Chess Club actively competes with schools that are a part of their division they are in, providing students with opportunities to test their skills and represent Shadow Ridge High School with pride. The club’s success is a testament to Bennett’s dedication and the students commitment to mastering the game of chess.

Sophomore Ayele Johnson is a proud member of the Chess Club and joined to have fun and to increase her skills. Johnson has been playing chess for 2 years now and absolutely loves the
thrill of playing the game. Ever since playing chess, Johnson agrees her cognitive skills, like critical thinking and problem solving, have increased, believing she has never been more focused before in her life. Johnson has also been taught life lessons such as taking responsibility, and accepting both wins and losses.
“I saw some friends playing it in middle school and it looked pretty fun,” Johnson states. “So I tried it and found it very intuitive. I think it teaches you how to really trust in your decisions but also reflect on them too.”
Shadow Ridge High School’s Chess Club, under the committed guidance of Kevin Bennett, is more than just a club, it is a thriving community that cultivates intellect, strategy, and sportsmanship. The club achievements reflect Bennett’s commitment and the students’ passion for chess, making it an integral part of the school’s extracurricular offerings.
