Through SkillsUSA contests, Shadow Ridge High School’s automotive program aims to prepare students for future occasions, in addition to teaching them how to spin wrenches, under the direction of Mr. Garrett, their instructor. Students prepare for months, to sharpen both their practical skills and technical knowledge. Electrical diagnostics, engine performance, brakes, suspension, steering, and safety protocols are some of the many things they practice.
They also learn about time management, how to maintain professionalism, keep teamwork a priority, and communication skills that are just as important in the classroom as they are on the competition floor.
Similar practice stations that are like actual contest situations are used to start training in class. Students also study ASE-style test materials and industry-standard service manuals and safety, real-world car issues, and get to experience guest lecturers. Students go through months of preparation that are both practical skills and technical knowledge.
Students must diagnose, fix, or explain vehicle issues within time constraints as they move through numerous stations during competitions. They are graded by judges based on technique, safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
SkillsUSA places a strong influence on employability, of course, aside from tech abilities. Students are put to the test through written assignments, presentations, and interviews which helps hone professionalism skills. These help them get ready for the reality of the automotive industry.

The advantages of competing extend well beyond the actual competition. Students get the chance to explore career possibilities, obtain scholarships, and network with a professional. This could also help personal development for many.
Mr. Garrett’s wise words, “Don’t be afraid of mistakes, they’re proof that you’re trying and learning,” serves as a reminder to them.
Students at Shadow Ridge soon understand that their efforts go beyond contests. It shows the resilience and discipline they develop.
Mr. Garrett says, “The skills you build today are the tools you’ll use to build your future tomorrow.”
Regardless of the outcome, each person leaves knowing they gained knowledge, and should take pride in their achievements.
SkillsUSA is ultimately a base for success rather than just a competition. With confidence, hard work, and dedication, all students can do great things.
Mr. Garett says, “Be proud of what you do, it’s your life, long after the competition is over.”
