Many students at Shadow ridge face a dilemma, whether to focus on school work or on a professional life.
Despite education being considered a full-time job, making money has become the primary goal for many students.
Emily Morano, a junior, is one of those students. “Working is important to me because it gives me an early experience of things I will need to know later on in life. It also teaches me how to be a better person financially, and teaches me how to save for the things I will need when I am on my own, like gas, food, and bills.”
Money is not only needed for the average life experience, but for many students, working is the only way to achieve higher education.
“Most colleges in Nevada have an expensive tuition, so I have about 4-5 years to save up for college, and having a job allows me to do so,” Morano said.
However, some students find routine and peace with work. Many people function better with a full fledged schedule, a day by day preparation and a list of what to expect. Chance Hester, a senior, is one of those who find working important to his mental health.
“I guess working gives me a meaning to life, you know,” said Hester. “I am always going to wake up in the morning, but having a job makes you get up and out of bed too.”
With so many goals and aspirations across Shadow Ridge, having a job is possibly one of the best ways to achieve them. Despite the extra weight and stress it may bring, working is a nice way to get some money, life experience, and college aid.
The average tuition in Nevada is around $9,000, and for most, that is not exactly pocket change. With the average salary for a retail job being 12/hr, working for just one month can be around $300 that was not there before.
Between working for gas, a future or even just a shred of sanity, the job pool is the perfect next step for students looking to add something to their plate or give back to the community.
With sports ending, working is the perfect activity to fill spare time. Even if a simple 5 hour shift is picked up, that is more money to be spent and saved, perfect for the upcoming gift-giving season.
