Everyone’s favorite sci-fi movie is returning to theaters, allowing fans to watch it in stunning 4K quality. Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” is an action-packed sci-fi drama set in a future where Earth’s atmosphere is rapidly depleting in oxygen, resulting in widespread death among people and living organisms. The increasing number of dust storms and crop blight makes it difficult to grow food.
An interview done with Christopher Nolan by Alistair Harkness gives readers an understanding on what Nolan thought about when creating this film, the man himself says, “For me the great thing about movies has always been the large screen/large audience experience. One of my earliest memories of going to the movies was going to see 2001 when I was seven years old and I’ve never forgotten the scale of that experience. I saw my first IMAX movie when I was 15 and immediately wanted to make features in that format at that point. So for me, working on this scale has been a long-held dream.”
Matthew McConaughey stars as Cooper, a former pilot who is now a farmer. He discovers coordinates etched in dust blown into his ranch house during a storm and decides to investigate later that night. This leads him to a secret NASA facility, where he is recruited to pilot a mission aimed at finding a more habitable planet for humanity as Earth continues to decline. The mission takes them through a wormhole, which is believed to be a gift from a more advanced race or a supernatural being. While the wormhole’s origins are a mystery, scientists have determined that it leads to another galaxy, which contains a solar system with three potential candidates for a second Earth.
The first planet they visit is almost entirely covered in tundra, making it inhospitable for humans. During their exploration, Cooper faces off against a survivor from a previous crew that was stranded there, who wants to witness the extinction of the human race. Cooper ultimately triumphs in the fight, allowing him and his team to return to space.
The second planet is located near a black hole, which creates a significant time anomaly. Despite having an almost perfect atmosphere, the entire planet is covered in the ocean, and colossal waves make it nearly impossible to escape. Tragically, they have to sacrifice one member of their team who doesn’t make it back in time. On this planet, one hour equates to several years back on Earth, complicating the situation for the crew member left on their orbiting ship.
Running out of options due to a heavy loss of fuel, the team decides to enter the black hole, which transports them into the fourth dimension. Here, Cooper manages to influence events from his past and ultimately provides his daughter with the key to giving humans a second chance.
This second chance is gravity giving humanity the ability to create huge colony ships that have a gravitational pull.
Noah Griffitt, freshman, states, “I am excited for the rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar because it feels
nostalgic since the last time I watched it and now they got it in IMAX with better graphics.”
Interstellar is supposed to come to theaters on December 6, 2024, so moviegoers should get ready to take a thrilling journey across space and time.
It’s apparent how amazing of a movie Interstellar really is to its viewers especially when IMAX gave the movie 8.7/10 stars. To the viewers they express that the movie isn’t just a movie to them, but instead an experience.
