Las Vegas, a growing city that attracts the eye of people for its gambling opportunities and strange encounters, became the center of a new mystery in May 2023 when a local family reported an encounter with what they described as extraterrestrial beings. The event began when a green flash streaked across the Nevada sky, captured on a police officer’s body camera. Within an hour, a nearby family called 911, claiming something had crashed into their backyard, and that they had seen non-human figures.

According to the family’s 911 call, they saw creatures that were between eight and ten feet tall with large eyes and strange features.
“They’re 100% not human,” the caller insisted. Responding police officers noted the family seemed genuinely terrified. One officer admitted feeling nervous himself, saying, “I have butterflies bro — saw a shooting star and now these people say there’s aliens in their backyard,” as reported by 8 News Now.
Noah Garcia, sophomore, says, “I wouldn’t believe in these theories people have. It could have easily been their eyes playing tricks on them or they could’ve seen the starlink satellites in the sky orbiting around.”
Despite a detailed investigation, authorities found no physical evidence of the creatures and eventually closed the case as “unfounded.” However, the family maintained their story, later hiring attorney Sam Heidari, who stated the family had “discovered two non-human life forms” and were dealing with unwanted trespassers on their property following the incident.
The Las Vegas sighting adds to a broader national trend of increased UFO reports. A 2022 declassified U.S. government report revealed over 500 documented sightings since 2004. Most of these cases remain unexplained, fueling public interest and media coverage.
While skeptics say that the Las Vegas event could have been a misinterpretation or a hoax, others point to the sincerity of the family and the initial police reaction as reasons to keep an open mind. Local news outlets like 10 News and AS.com noted that the combination of multiple eyewitnesses, video evidence of the sky flash, and the police’s documented concern make this case stand out among typical UFO reports.

Joseph Lewis, sophomore, states, “I think that if these people are telling the truth that we can really benefit from finding these aliens.”
Though no conclusive proof of extraterrestrial life has emerged from the Las Vegas incident, it has caused debates about what might be out there, and whether humans are truly alone. For now, the mystery lingers in the desert air, joining the long history of strange sightings linked to Nevada’s infamous skies.
