In the depths of Shadow Ridge’s music wing, is the heart of the marching band world where rhythm meets discipline, creativity fuses with tradition, and leadership orchestrates chaos. Marching band director, Zacharey Hartley, commands the field with the precision of a conductor and the passion of a lifelong performer. As the dedicated director of the Shadow Ridge High School Marching Band, Hartley has transformed a once average program into a vigorous ensemble full of sound and spirit.
Hartley’s passion for music has grown exponentially over the years ever since he started directing. His approach to directing the band combines rigorous training with a deep understanding of each student’s potential. He fosters an environment of teamwork and discipline while encouraging creativity and individual expression.
“We focus a lot on the student leadership aspect in our group,” states Hartley, “It honestly starts with helping the students feel a sense of pride in their group, and as that grows, there naturally is a drive to take a larger role in the success of the group.”
The fun never stops in the marching band. Whether it’s in rehearsals, practices, or performances. Hartley loves seeing the students in marching band get along and create friendships, it is one of his favorite things to see as a whole. Marching bands can teach students discipline, teamwork, and time management skills. From band camp to bus rides, Hartley loves growing with the students in marching band and creating unforgettable memories.

“Seeing the students’ energy and excitement for having a highly productive rehearsal,” Hartley stated, “or the understanding of what they need to change or do better if they had a less than effective rehearsal is great to see as their director. However, I think having the two outstanding members getting the opportunity to pie me in the face at the 4th annual March-A-Thon is a lot of fun as well.”
Sophomore Jada Madden joined the visual voice of marching band or ubiquitously known as color guard her freshman year and has no absolute regrets for joining Shadow Ridge’s Marching Band. Every day, Madden has always looked forward to practice because of the people and the amount of fun it is.
“Being in marching band for the past 2 years has been an adventure in a good way,” Madden states, “You get to learn a lot just from marching and it’s not just about marching band, they all become family while everyone came a long way together.”
The beauty of the marching band lies beneath in the creation of a disciplined and joint community, working together as one to create a beautiful and harmonious rhythm to the community.
