Taking Dual Credit courses allows high school students in the junior and senior classes to earn college credit while still in high school. These courses enable students to complete some of their college requirements early, giving them a head start on their education. In order to be eligible for these classes during 11th and 12th grade, the student’s unweighted GPA must be 3.0 or higher. To remain in the program, students must maintain at least a C average each semester. If a student fails to meet this requirement in the first semester, they will need to withdraw and pursue other options.
Dual Credit 126/127 (Math) is taught by Debra Eichenser and she doesn’t make it easy, but she does make it worthwhile for the students who are up for the challenge.
“Like most math classes it has helped me freshen up on math, especially after summer break. But those who enjoy math or are seeking college credit early on should really consider it, as a way to get those classes out of the way,” junior Sterling Burnett stated. “Along with this, it also helps improve their mathematical skills which for some can be part of their future careers.”
Because it is a college-level class, it prepares students for what they might see once they actually go to college.
“I’ll be taking harder math courses in college and I think it’s great that I am pushing myself already so I’m used to it when I get to college,” senior Rylee Serah Cainglet says, “It also helps me get used to the atmosphere. While I can always ask the teacher for help, it’s great to problem solve by myself which is something that’ll be very useful in college.”
Taking a college course in high school isn’t easy, but the sense of accomplishment that comes with earning a good score makes it rewarding.
“It always feels good when I have studied and really tried to do well on a topic and then applying that to a test to get a good score,” Burnett stated.
Taking college-level in high school may seem intimidating at first, but approaching it with an open mind can reveal the benefits beyond academic credits.
“Walk into it with an open mind. A lot of people say that this class is difficult, but I think it’s a great way to challenge yourself. It’s also a great way to get college credit,” Cainglet said. “College classes like this can be expensive and with this advantage, you can get the same amount of college credits for a lower price.”
