At Shadow Ridge, students have several fun electives to choose from, and ceramics is one of the many. At this moment, the ceramics are planning for a field trip. If any ceramicists want any more information, they are able to reach out to the ceramics teacher, Mrs Brackney, or go to the Shadow Ridge’s Ceramics Instagram page, @srhsmustandmudhole.
Senior, Alicja Wisniewski states, “There’s a field trip coming up in October to gather and use wild clay and learn about it. I’m pretty excited for it. I think it’s a really cool and unique learning experience for everyone.¨
The first field trip is only for Ceramics lll and is scheduled for October 22nd. Students in Ceramics lll will be going to Logandale to dig for native natural clays to bring back and process at school where they will make pieces out of the clay they found and collected. They will also be visiting the Lost City Museum where they will be partnering up with UNLV archeology department and learning about indigenous pottery to Nevada and how Native Americans created pottery from start to finish.
For the second field trip, it is for Ceramic ll and lll to attend NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) 59th Conference on March ll6-ll9 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
According to nceca.net, “NCECA is a dynamic organization that engages and sustains a community for ceramic art, teaching and learning. In addition to deepening knowledge within the field, NCECA expands it by working to cultivate the next generation of ceramic artists and enthusiasts through programming that affects professional artists, K-12 schools, community centers, universities, museums, galleries, businesses, organizations, collectors and enthusiasts of ceramic art.”
As the time comes closer, Mrs. Brackney has been extremely busy preparing for the field trips all while taking care of all of her classes, trying to balance teaching, grading and preparing.
Students who are interested in going, need to be enrolled in Ceramics ll and Ceramics lll. There are no other requirements except for being respectful and responsible. If students are interested in joining ceramics, they can choose the class as an elective for next year.
