This school year, Shadow Ridge High School is introducing a brand new club available to all students. Mr. Flynn and many others in room 216 have worked incredibly hard to bring the Creative Writing Club to life!
Club meetings have already started every Thursday right after school at 1:15 p.m., running until approximately 2:00 p.m. Meetings will be held for a longer duration when cross country season ends, as Mr. Flynn is the coach of cross country as well as the advisor for the Creative Writing Club.
The Creative Writing Club was brought forth with the help of its dedicated senior president, Noa Grover.
“I myself have always loved writing, and know many people at Shadow Ridge who use writing as their preferred creative outlet,” Grover says. “I’d wanted a writing club for a few years, but I never went for it out of fear it wouldn’t end up being something people enjoyed. However, some time near the end of my junior year, I was inspired by the old Poetry Club banner from the 2010s,” Grover adds.
Banners from previous clubs at Shadow Ridge are showcased in the cafeteria, where Grover found motivation to found the Creative Writing Club.
“All I can say now is, I’m more than happy I took that leap of faith. The community in the Creative Writing Club is much different from a lot of the other clubs I’ve participated in,” commented Grover. “Here in Creative Writing, it’s not just one kind of person. We have poets, playwrights, songwriters, storytellers, a mix of everything and everyone. It’s honestly beautiful.”
Luckily, the club has many involved members, like El Strickland.
Strickland says, “What I love about the club is the people. Our advisor, Mr. Flynn is really laid back and lets us enjoy the club, and he even gives us compliments sometimes when we walk out of the door.”
“The council is also amazing because they put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into making this club amazing.” Strickland adds. “The members of the club are all so imaginative and inspiring, it’s truly a one-of-a-kind club.”
As progressed as the club is so far, the council still has many plans to expand not just the amount of members, but the fun and enjoyment one can have at a meeting.
Grover states “I’d love to add more interactive activities for the rest of the student body who may not be aware of the existence of our club, seeing as its one of the newer ones at Shadow, only founded near the end of the 23-24 school year.”
The Creative Writing Club was founded not just for Grover’s benefit, but for all of the other students involved currently and in the future.
Grover shares “My goal is to provide a creative outlet in the form of a club that will last years after I leave here. Not for the sake of marking my name in the Shadow Ridge books for eternity, but rather so my fellow peers and students who come after me can experience the joy I and many others feel with our pen against the page.”
