On April 2, it was announced that assistant principal, Missy Shipp, was a finalist for the AP Educator of The Year Award, presented by Starlight Awards CCSD. She, and three others, are now finalists of the program, and the winner will be announced April 16. Almost all of the main office staff came together to surprise Mrs. Shipp in the library.
In order to surprise Shipp, Mrs. Kannon called her on her radio, telling her to come “meet someone” at the library. Shipp’s award was displayed at the front of the room. Student Council members made posters to celebrate her achievement, one in particular reading, “Shipp, Shipp Hooray! We [Heart] You!” Several students and staff joined together to film her reaction as she walked through the library doors. She was very surprised and emotional to see what her coworkers and family members had done for her.
Shipp explains, “I was completely shocked! I am so grateful towards our students, colleagues, and the school community. I appreciate the recognition of being valued and appreciated for the hard work and dedication put into making Shadow Ridge the best high school in the nation. I love being able to make a positive impact on students’ lives.”
Over the years, Shipp has helped to make Shadow Ridge a memorable and enjoyable place. She considers the perspectives of everyone and makes decisions in the best interests of students, parents, and other staff members.
Junior, Angelica Luff explains, “I’m a member of Student Council for Shadow Ridge and we love Mrs. Shipp! She does so much for the school and its programs and we are so grateful for her.”
Shipp always makes sure that she is involved in as many Shadow Ridge activities and programs as possible. She is a big fan of The Lariat and always comments supportive things on journalists’ articles.
Shipp continues, “My favorite part of the surprise was seeing the entire library filled with my family, friends, students, counselors, teachers, region and CCSD leaders! I was so honored that everyone was there to surprise me!”
As Shipp received her award, her family and friends cheered for her success.
Luff says, “Being a Mustang means working hard and putting effort into things you love, it is obvious Mrs. Shipp loves Shadow Ridge. She deserves this award.”
