Here at Shadow Ridge High School, students have many opportunities to explore their creativity through a variety of classes. One of the most challenging and inspiring courses offered is AP Art, taught by Mr. Joseph Weigand. This advanced placement class is designed for students who are passionate about art and wish to build a strong portfolio that reflects both their skill and personal vision.

AP Art is more than just another elective, it’s a chance for students to express themselves on a deeper level. The course emphasizes the process of artistic growth, encouraging students to experiment with new ideas, materials, and techniques. Through guided exploration, students learn how to communicate complex themes and emotions through their artwork, ultimately preparing them for college-level art programs and future creative careers.
A central part of the class is something called the “Sustained Investigation.” Each student must create a six-word theme that defines their body of work throughout the year. This theme serves as both a foundation and a challenge, requiring students to explore one idea in many unique and meaningful ways.
“I see the Sustained Investigation as a journey for the students to unlock their creativity,” Mr. Weigand explains. “It makes them think of how to see the same theme in different ways, which helps them be more creative.”
This approach pushes students to think critically about their art and to develop a personal style. Many find that the sustained investigation not only improves their technical skills but also helps them better understand themselves as artists. As students work through their projects, they gain confidence in their creative decisions and learn how to express their perspectives visually.
Beyond the classroom, the AP Art program also prepares students for the real world. By the end of the year, each student will have a complete art portfolio ready to present to colleges, scholarship programs, or future employers. The experience teaches time management, problem-solving, and self-expression skills that extend far beyond art itself.
At its core, AP Art at Shadow Ridge is about creative freedom, chances to explore, and to grow. Under Mr. Weigand’s guidance, students are not only learning art; they’re learning to see the world in their own unique way.
