The girls flag football season is coming up fast, since flag football has won many state championships and is consistently a powerhouse for Shadow sports, many girls are interested in joining. Due to that, this year they will continue having a varsity, JV, and freshman team to open more opportunities to more kids. The girls can’t wait for the season to start so they can bond with teammates and become the best version of themselves. The coaches are preparing to coach to the best of their abilities and help the kids stay motivated to accomplish their goals.
Coach Nighswonger says his main goal for this season is to, “Come together as a team and achieve our potential.”

He is striving for growth in his players. With intramurals starting, the Mustangs are ready to stride through all the challenges they will face this season. The returning athletes are already working hard to sharpen their skills to improve from past seasons. Many of the girls are new to the sport so returning players will most likely take on a bigger role this year. The sense of community in the team is also something that stands out, the coaches work hard to remind the players about the importance of teamwork and communication. This program has become something that athletes can use to grow as competitors, leaders, and role models.
As the Mustangs look towards the future they know the road ahead won’t be easy. Their biggest rivals, Arbor view, Palo Verde, and Desert Oasis are always a good competition. The team is still confident they can face the challenge with determination, drive, and discipline.
Coach Dubious states, “Palo Verde and Desert Oasis were our biggest competition last year.”
With Mustang pride they believe they are ready to stride through whatever obstacles get thrown their way. No matter what the scoreboard says, the girls flag football program is building a long-lasting team with resilience and passion for the game.
Junior Chloe Covington says, “The competition is a big part of the fun in flag football.”

The season promises to be filled with hard work, exciting games, and unforgettable memories. Beyond the competition, this program is also helping to grow school spirit and equality within sports. Games bring the community together, crowds of students, parents, and staff come out and help create an atmosphere of excitement and pride to each game. The players know they are not just representing themselves but also their school community every time they play on the field. The extra support from their community motivates them to play harder and reminds them that the game is about more than just winning.
