Here at Shadow Ridge, there are many campus security monitors and security officers working daily to ensure a safe and secure environment on campus. While it may seem as though they simply patrol the halls, their responsibilities go far beyond that. Behind the scenes, they play a very crucial role in keeping Shadow Ridge running smoothly, efficiently, and most importantly, safely.
One of these dedicated hall monitors is Giovanni Chanes, who has a very early start to his day.
“I get here at six in the morning,” Chanes said. “Once I get here, I open up the school and get all the scanners ready so that students can come in and scan through the school.”
A major part of his morning involves helping students with their IDs, ensuring that all students can get into their classes without any issues occurring.
“We also print out IDs because we’re trying to establish consistency with everyone having their ID,” he explained. “Everything you do with getting into class is your ID. All that is done through the Infinite Campus system.”
After ensuring students have received an ID and have checked in, Chanes begins the next part of his day, which is patrolling the halls and assisting the upper office.
“We patrol the hallways to make sure that students are in class doing what they’re supposed to do,” he said. “We do pop-in checks in the restrooms to make sure nobody’s in there hanging out or doing something they’re not supposed to be doing.”
Communication and teamwork are essential to the hall monitors. With multiple campus security monitors patrolling the school, keeping everything coordinated is key.
“If something goes down, we have to be able to communicate and respond,” Chanes stated. “We’re not just here to keep the peace, but to make sure everyone at Shadow Ridge—students and staff alike—is safe.”
“One message I’d give to students is that we’re on your side,” he said.
Chanes wants students to know that the hall monitors are not there to get anyone in trouble, but rather to help. Through their dedication, communication, and care, hall monitors like Giovanni Chanes help ensure that Shadow Ridge remains a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Their efforts often go unnoticed, but without them, the school would not run as smoothly as it does today.
